The dream of students in Doranahalli and surrounding villages has come true with the newly-sanctioned PU college at Doranahalli starting classes from the current academic year. Earlier, after passing SSLC, students had to go to either Shahapur or Yadgir to pursue pre-university courses. For several years, parents and students had been demanding a separate PU college in Doranahalli village.. Recently, MLA Channareddy Patil Tunnur began putting pressure on the government of Karnataka to fulfil their demand.
โIt was a long-pending demand of the students and parents of Doranahalli, and the surrounding village. I met the then chief minister Siddaramaiah and submitted a memorandum with our request. Due to our persistence, the government sanctioned a PU college,โ Mr Tunnur said. Doranahalli is a big hobli in Shahapur taluk coming under Yadgir Assembly constituency, which is represented by Mr Tunnut, with a population of 12,000. Due to the lack of a PU college nearby, the education of students had faced a setback, as the majority of girl students were forced to drop their dream to pursue PU courses.
As many as 50 new colleges, including Doranahalli, were sanctioned. The government of Karnataka has directed them to admit students for commerce courses this academic year, with plans for science and arts streams in the future. Presently, 20 students have got admission for the first-year PU course. Five guest lecturers are teaching them in the existing government high school building. โThe government should build a separate new building for the PU college with all necessary facilities.
If three streams โ Commerce, Science and Arts โ run concurrently, the number of admission will increase,โ said Nijaguna Pujari, a local resident.
