Messi has also scored seven times in four matches for Argentina, whereas Mbappe has seven goals and two assists to his name in five matches for France. The seven goals each by Mbappe, Messi, and Haaland in this year’s World Cup have created a new record.

It is the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup that three players have managed to score at least seven goals in one edition of the tournament. In the 2022 FIFA World Cup, two players—Messi and Mbappe—had managed to score at least seven goals, but in the FIFA World Cup 2026, three players have scored at least seven goals.
