(IMAGE: SOURCED) At least six people were killed and one person was injured after a portion of an old residential building collapsed in the Janata Nagar area of Mankhurd on Sunday evening, capping a day of rain-related tragedies across Mumbai. The incident occurred at around 8.30 pm behind the Hanuman Temple in Janata Nagar, where a section comprising two to three residential units of Building No. 5 suddenly gave way.
Preliminary information indicated that the affected structure was a ground-plus-three (G+3) building. Fire brigade personnel, police, ambulances and other emergency response teams rushed to the spot soon after the collapse. Rescue operations were underway to search the debris for anyone who might still be trapped. Officials said six people died in the collapse, while one person sustained injuries and was shifted to hospital for treatment. The cause of the collapse was not immediately known. Earlier in the day, two people died in separate tree-related incidents as heavy rain continued to lash the city. According to civic officials, a 63-year-old man, identified as Yunus Kundawala, was killed after a tree collapsed on a shop near the Hindi BMC School in the Naupada locality of Kurla West at around 12.40 pm.
He was pulled out from the debris and rushed to Fauzia Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. In another incident, an 18-year-old youth, Kumar Hasan Raza Jahangir Alam Syed, died after a tree branch snapped and fell on him while he was riding a motorcycle in the Aarey Colony area of Goregaon East. Although the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, it was reported to authorities on Sunday. He was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
