Madhya Pradesh emerged as the overall champion at the ASMITA South Zone Women’s Canoeing and Kayaking Championship 2025-26, which concluded at the Gambeeramgedda Reservoir in Visakhapatnam on Sunday after two days of competition. Odisha finished runners-up, while Kerala secured the third place in the championship, which witnessed participation from women paddlers representing southern States as well as other parts of the country.
Competitors excelled across various events, winning gold, silver and bronze medals. Trophies, medals, certificates of appreciation and cash awards were presented to the winners at the closing ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, Canoeing and Kayaking Association of Andhra Pradesh president B. Balaram Naidu said that the Union government’s ASMITA initiative had emerged as an important platform for women’s empowerment by providing opportunities for athletes to progress to the national and international levels.
He said the successful conduct of the championship would further strengthen Visakhapatnam’s position as a leading water sports destination in the country. Naidu thanked the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Khelo India, the Indian Canoeing and Kayaking Association, the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP), the district administration, SDRF, GVMC, police, revenue, health, fire services, irrigation department, technical officials, coaches, referees, volunteers and the media for their support in organising the championship.
SAAP officials, district officials, public representatives, sports association members, athletes and sports enthusiasts attended the valedictory function.
