(AFP file photo) Iran’s military on Sunday said it is using the ceasefire period with the US to strengthen its combat readiness, warning that any “enemy mistake" would be met with a “decisive response". Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia said the armed forces are treating the pause in hostilities as an opportunity to improve operational strength and preparedness. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the funeral prayer ceremony for slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla, Akraminia said Iran routinely uses periods of calm to reinforce its military capabilities.
“We have repeatedly declared that we use any ceasefire opportunity to upgrade our combat capabilities, and we will not lose or overlook a single moment," he said. ‘No moment will be wasted’ Akraminia added that the military would continue its efforts to enhance readiness during the truce period. “We will not waste a single moment or neglect this," he said. He also warned that any escalation by adversaries would be met with a strong response. “If the enemies make a mistake, they will definitely face a crushing and decisive response from the Iranian armed forces," he said. His remarks came as thousands gathered for a second consecutive day at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla religious complex for funeral ceremonies of Khamenei and four family members killed in February 28 Israeli airstrikes.
Khamenei was killed aged 86 at his compound in central Tehran when the US and Israel launched their opening strikes of the war, triggering a wider regional conflict. The war, which lasted several weeks, saw US and Israeli airstrikes targeting military sites, energy infrastructure and civilian areas. According to Iranian state media, more than 3,000 people were killed in the fighting. Last month, Washington and Tehran signed a preliminary agreement aimed at ending the war, although negotiations on a permanent settlement are still ongoing. Sporadic exchanges of fire have continued despite the truce.
