The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has warned the public against misleading social media posts by individuals falsely claiming to advise the ministry on policy matters and offering paid guidance on working with the government. In an advisory issued through its official MEA FactCheck account, the ministry said it had noticed several social media users presenting themselves as policy advisers to the MEA on issues such as trade, migration and other government matters.
The ministry clarified that these individuals have no official association with the MEA despite portraying themselves as experts or insiders. The advisory also noted that some of these accounts are paid consultations, webinars and mentoring sessions, claiming they can help people understand the ministry’s functioning or provide access to opportunities related to the MEA. It has come to the notice of the Ministry that certain individuals on social media platforms are making posts suggesting that they are advising MEA on policy related matters including on trade, migration and other issues. The advisory is part of the government’s broader efforts to curb misinformation, impersonation and online fraud. Authorities have repeatedly cautioned citizens against relying on unofficial accounts that misuse the names of government departments or falsely claim insider access to mislead the public or seek financial gain.
