A woman sustained injuries after a wild boar barged into her shop and unleashed a violent attack at Ranni in Pathanamthitta district on Sunday (July 5, 2026) morning. The incident occurred around 8.30 a.m. at a mini supermarket along the Punalur–Muvattupuzha State Highway. The injured, Beena (Susan), a resident of Mandirampadi near Ranni, was arranging goods after opening the shop when the lone wild boar crashed through the entrance and charged at her.
The animal chased her inside the shop and attempted to gore her with its tusks. Ms. Beena sustained injuries to her hand while trying to fend off the attack. She managed to run out of the shop, but the wild boar continued to pursue her until local residents, alerted by her cries for help, rushed to the spot and drove the animal away. She was rushed to the Ranni Taluk Hospital, where she underwent treatment and received stitches for the injuries.
Shot dead Following the attack, the wild boar ran amok through the town and charged along the Punalur–Muvattupuzha State Highway. It darted between moving vehicles and through residential neighbourhoods, creating panic among motorists and residents. The animal was later traced to a rubber plantation about a kilometre from the supermarket during a search by local residents. It was subsequently shot dead with the permission of panchayat authorities.
Residents said that although wild boars frequently stray into the area and damage crops, this was the first instance of one entering a commercial establishment in the town and attacking a person. The incident has also heightened concerns over the increasing incidence of human-wildlife conflict in the region.
