(Photo: X) In a major crackdown on maritime drug trafficking, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) have seized 115 kg of cocaine, valued at around Rs 1,150 crore, from a container vessel off the Mundra coast in Gujarat, officials said on Wednesday. The high-value seizure was made during a joint operation carried out on the intervening night of May 25 and 26, following specific intelligence inputs shared by ATS Gujarat about narcotics being smuggled through the sea route, an official release stated.
According to an input by ANI, the consignment of cocaine was being smuggled into India from South American nations via Pakistan. Acting on the tip-off, ICG interceptor boats with ATS personnel onboard launched an extensive search in the Mundra anchorage area. During the operation, suspicious activity was detected on a container vessel identified as MV Europe, which was anchored around five nautical miles off Mundra. The ICG and ATS personnel immediately moved to the spot and, despite low visibility conditions, managed to recover five bags from the sea. On examination, the bags were found to contain 115 packets of a white powdery substance, each weighing around one kilogram. Preliminary tests confirmed the substance to be cocaine, officials said. The total quantity of the seized contraband is approximately 115 kg, with an estimated value of about Rs 1,150 crore in the international market, based on open-source assessments, the release added. The vessel has since been brought to port for further investigation. A joint probe by the ICG, ATS Gujarat and other agencies is currently underway to determine the origin, route and intended recipients of the consignment.
