The celebrations included slogan shouting, bursting of crackers and distribution of sweets. Supporters repeatedly raised chants of “DK… DK…" while welcoming reports suggesting that the Congress leadership may soon finalise a transition plan in Karnataka.
Congress leadership change The celebrations came as political activity increased both in Bengaluru and New Delhi over the issue of Karnataka’s next chief minister. Sources in the Indian Congress told CNN-News18 that the oath-taking ceremony for a new chief minister is likely to take place on May 30. The possible change in leadership follows an intensifying power struggle within the Karnataka Congress between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. Party insiders indicated that the Congress high command is working towards what they described as a “smooth transition of power". Crucial meeting planned in Bengaluru Amid the speculation, Shivakumar is expected to hold an important breakfast meeting with Siddaramaiah on Thursday morning. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the chief minister’s official residence “Kaveri" in Bengaluru.
According to Shivakumar’s office, he will return from Delhi early Thursday morning and head directly to Siddaramaiah’s residence for the discussions. The meeting is being closely watched as the Congress leadership attempts to manage the transition without triggering further tensions inside the state unit. Sources quoted by IANS indicated that Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar may jointly address the media after the meeting. The possible joint appearance is being viewed as an effort to reduce speculation and project unity within the Karnataka Congress amid reports of an imminent leadership change. The Congress high command has been engaged in discussions for several weeks as it tries to balance competing power centres in the state. Meanwhile, celebrations among Shivakumar’s supporters continued in Ramanagara, showing growing expectations among party workers that the senior Congress leader could soon take charge as Karnataka’s next chief minister.
