(You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Thiruvananthapuram: Several parts of Kerala received rain on Sunday as the IMD forecast isolated heavy showers in the northern districts and issued orange and yellow alerts for various parts of the state over the next three days.A yellow alert has been issued for Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts for Sunday, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the Kannur and Kasaragod districts on July 6, and for the Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts on July 7, forecasting isolated very heavy rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.In view of the weather warnings, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority urged people living in landslide, mudslide and flash flood-prone areas to shift to safer places as directed by the authorities.It advised residents living along riverbanks and downstream of dams to remain vigilant and relocate if instructed by officials.The KSDMA asked people in disaster-prone areas to ensure that relief camps have been opened in their localities and, if necessary, move to such camps during the daytime after coordinating with local self-government and revenue authorities.It cautioned those living in weak or poorly roofed houses to remain alert in view of the possibility of strong winds and advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.People have been warned against crossing rivers, entering water bodies for bathing or fishing, gathering on bridges over swollen rivers, or visiting waterfalls, reservoirs and hilly tourist destinations until the weather warnings are withdrawn.Motorists have been advised to exercise caution on roads running alongside water bodies and avoid driving through flooded stretches.The KSDMA urged residents in vulnerable areas to keep emergency kits ready and said 24x7 taluk and district control rooms are functioning across the state.People can seek assistance through the toll-free emergency numbers 1070 and 1077, it added.An orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 to 20 cm in a day, while a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 and 11 cm.
