Mojtaba Khamenei Remains Out Of Public View, His Brothers Lead Ayatollah Khamenei's Funeral Prayers Published By, Last Updated: July 05, 2026, 13:51 IST Thousands gathered in Tehran as Iran began a week-long farewell to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei remained absent from public view. Mojtaba Khamenei's brothers at father's funeral (Video screengrab) Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei did not appear in public on Sunday as three of his brothers led funeral prayers beside the coffin of their slain father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during one of the largest mourning ceremonies held since his death, Reuters reported. State television broadcast images of Mostafa, Meysam and Masoud Khamenei standing behind the coffins of the late Iranian leader and four members of his family at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, a vast religious complex where thousands of mourners gathered. The coffins of Khamenei, his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and 14-month-old granddaughter were placed together for the prayers. The absence of Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father as Iran’s supreme leader following the February 28 attack that killed several members of the family, drew attention as the Islamic Republic continued its week-long funeral ceremonies.
There has been no public appearance or official image of Mojtaba since the strikes that marked the beginning of the war between Iran, Israel and the United States. People close to his inner circle previously told Reuters that he suffered severe facial injuries along with significant damage to one or both legs in the attack. NATIONWIDE MOURNING CONTINUES Iran has turned the funeral into a nationwide event, presenting it as a demonstration of public loyalty to the Islamic Republic and its revolutionary ideals. Authorities have organised a series of ceremonies that will continue throughout the week, including processions in several cities across Iran and visits to Shi’ite holy sites in neighbouring Iraq. Before Sunday’s public prayers, Ayatollah Khamenei’s coffin had lain in state indoors, where senior Iranian officials and foreign dignitaries were able to pay their respects. On Saturday, the casket was moved outdoors and displayed beneath glass alongside the coffins of the other family members killed in the attack. The government expects millions of people to participate in the ceremonies and has arranged transport, food and accommodation for mourners travelling from different parts of the country.
