#BreakingNews | The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) has initiated a major project to study Indian history using vernacular and regional-language sources, prompting widespread debate after reports suggested it could lead to a "rewriting" of Indian history.
The Union Government, however, has clarified that the initiative is not about rewriting history, but about filling gaps in existing historical research by incorporating regional archives, local records, inscriptions, manuscripts and other vernacular sources that have received limited attention.
Supporters argue the project could make Indian historiography more inclusive and representative of diverse regional perspectives. Critics, meanwhile, have raised concerns about methodology, interpretation and the potential implications for history education.
