Rapid Read Justice Yashwant Varma and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. (X/PTI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday said the report of the three-member committee that investigated corruption allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma will be tabled in the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session beginning July 20. Speaking on the sidelines of a programme with West Bengal MLAs, Birla said it would be up to the House to decide the next course of action after the report, submitted by the committee headed by Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar, is presented.
The report is likely to be tabled on the first day of the session. Birla also noted that MPs from both the ruling alliance and the Opposition had signed the notice seeking Justice Varma’s removal. Justice Varma, currently a judge of the Allahabad High Court, is facing allegations of financial irregularities after emergency responders reportedly found bundles of burnt currency notes at an outhouse of his New Delhi residence following a fire incident in March last year. While some legal experts believe the removal motion became infructuous after Varma resigned, sources said the issue remains unresolved, TOI reported. “The fact remains that his high court continues to name him among its serving judges," a source said. The source added that despite his resignation, the inquiry committee completed its investigation and submitted its findings to Birla.
The allegations surfaced when Varma was serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court. He was subsequently repatriated to his parent Allahabad High Court. More than 146 Lok Sabha MPs from across party lines, including Rahul Gandhi of the Congress and BJP leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and Anurag Singh Thakur, signed the notice seeking his removal. In his submissions before both the in-house committee constituted by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and the panel appointed by Birla, Varma denied any wrongdoing and said he did not know how the unaccounted cash was found at his residence. Although Justice Verma resigned in April this year amid the possibility of impeachment proceedings, his resignation is yet to be accepted by the President of India, leaving open the possibility of initiating the impeachment process.
