The United Nations says at least 45 civilians were killed in El Obeid, North Kordofan, between 6 and 28 June. Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army are battling for the city, a strategic crossroads linking Khartoum, Darfur and Kordofan.
The UN warns a major assault could trap hundreds of thousands, with nearly 500,000 residents and about 100,000 displaced people at risk. Satellite imagery shows 51 kilometres of army defences; RSF drones have struck medical sites, displacement camps and infrastructure.
