Mumbai Rains: Five Flights Diverted, 17 Abort Landings Amid Heavy Downpour Published By, Last Updated: July 04, 2026, 23:13 IST Adverse weather disrupted flight operations in Mumbai on Saturday, forcing five inbound flights to divert to nearby airports as heavy rain and poor visibility. Rapid Read Heavy rain and poor visibility disrupted flight operations. Heavy rain and poor visibility disrupted flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Saturday, forcing five Mumbai bound flights to divert to nearby airports as adverse weather made landing conditions unsafe, airport sources said. The affected flights included three operated by IndiGo and two by Air India. According to airport officials, unstable approaches caused by intense rainfall and reduced visibility prompted pilots to divert the aircraft instead of attempting to land in Mumbai.
In addition to the five diversions, pilots of 17 other flights also carried out diversions before completing their journeys safely. Of the five flights that were diverted, four later returned to Mumbai after weather conditions improved and normal landing operations resumed. Among the IndiGo services, flight 6E 594 from Raipur and flight 6E 6544 from Varanasi were diverted to Surat, while flight 6E 6283 from Bengaluru was rerouted to Ahmedabad. Air India flight AI 2963 from Delhi was diverted to Surat, while flight AI 472 from Chandigarh landed at Manohar International Airport in Goa. Several parts of the city recorded nearly 200 mm of rainfall over a 12-hour period, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The heavy downpour inundated several low lying areas, triggered road cave-ins, uprooted trees and caused house collapses in some localities. Road traffic slowed significantly across many parts of the city, while suburban railway services, the lifeline of Mumbai’s public transport network, also faced disruptions due to the inclement weather. Authorities continued to monitor the weather as operations gradually stabilised. While most diverted flights were able to return to Mumbai later in the day, officials advised passengers to check the status of their flights as changing weather conditions continued to affect air traffic.
