Few Bollywood moments are as unforgettable as the iconic Sholay scene in which a drunken Veeru, played by Dharmendra, climbs atop a village water tank and threatens to jump unless he is allowed to marry Basanti. Life appeared to imitate cinema in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district on Saturday, where a woman staged a similar high-voltage drama.
But this time, it wasn’t Veeru on the water tank—it was a woman who climbed the railway tower with her three children, demanding that she be allowed to live with her alleged lover. The high-voltage drama unfolded for several hours, drawing hundreds of onlookers and triggering a massive rescue operation. After receiving the information, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), local police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the scene. Officials repeatedly appealed to the woman to climb down, but she refused, insisting that her demand be fulfilled. After hours of negotiations, rescue personnel managed to safely bring the woman and her children down from a height of nearly 100 feet on the towering structure.
Assistant Commandant of the Gonda RPF, Mahendra Prasad, said the woman had taken the extreme step because she wanted to live with a man and was trying to pressure authorities into helping her. Interestingly, this is not the first bizarre tower-climbing episode reported from Uttar Pradesh in recent weeks. Last month, an allegedly intoxicated man climbed onto an 11,000-volt high-tension electricity line in Maharajganj district and lay across the wires for nearly an hour, leaving residents in shock. He survived because the power supply on the line had reportedly been disrupted just minutes earlier. Police and electricity department officials ensured the line remained de-energised until he was safely rescued.
