(AFP) As Iran prepared a teary-eyed farewell to slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, thousands of mourners gathered at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla and chanted slogans of “death to America" and “death to Israel", while calling for revenge. Iran officially began six days of public funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the initial salvo of US-Israeli strikes on February 28. The processions are due to continue in Iraq before Khamenei’s burial.

The coffin carrying Khamenei arrived at Grand Mosalla, with the casket draped in the colours of the Iranian flag. According to Iranian authorities, an estimated 15 to 20 million people are expected to gather for the farewell ceremony of the country’s slain leader. Heavy security measures have been put in place nationwide, especially in and around the capital of Tehran. Top Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, paid respects to Khamenei, while his son Mojtaba stayed away from the limelight. Foreign dignitaries landed in Tehran to pay their final respects to Khamenei on Friday.
