The political landscape of Karnataka is heading for a dramatic reset, with CM Siddaramaiah likely to tender his resignation on May 28 to pave the way for his deputy, Shivakumar, to assume the top post. On Tuesday, a crucial meeting in New Delhi was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader and MP Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. The anticipated power transition in the state comes nearly three years after the Congress party stormed to power in Karnataka. With his clean image and a massive supporter base across the state, Siddaramaiah was chosen for the CM’s post.

Shivakumar, on the other hand, was credited for rebuilding the organisation and shaping the party’s comeback in the state. An unsaid pact was agreed upon between the two tallest leaders of the Karnataka Congress — Siddaramaiah would govern for the first 2.5 years, followed by Deputy CM DK Shivakumar for the remainder. However, no official announcement was made regarding the agreement. A Bigger Role For Sidda On Cards Sources told CNN-News18 that the Congress top leadership made a concerted effort to ensure Siddaramaiah’s exit from the Karnataka’s politics is respectable and strategically fruitful for the party. Being a key OBC face, he could be endorsed in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections at the national level. According to sources, Siddaramaiah could subsequently be moved to the Rajya Sabha as part of a broader strategic move.
