India Today's Foreign Affairs Editor Geeta Mohan reports from Tehran as the city prepares for the funeral service of the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. World leaders are arriving at the Grand Mosallah to pay their last respects amidst extraordinary security arrangements. The Iranian administration is projecting a strong message of defiance against the West, maintaining they will not buckle under pressure following the strikes that killed the Supreme Leader.
Extensive logistical preparations are underway to manage an expected congregation of twenty million people. Emergency medical services and water stations are on standby across the city to assist the massive crowds. Central Tehran is under lockdown with traffic diverted and roads leading to the Grand Mosallah closed until Monday. The mortal remains will later be transported to Qom, Najaf, Karbala, and finally Mashhad, where the late Supreme Leader will be laid to rest.
