Poland is ramping up military spending and border defenses, fearing it could be one of Russia’s next targets after Ukraine. For decades, Poland has relied on US support for its defense. But now Donald Trump is planning to pull US troops out of Europe, causing alarm for Poland and other countries on NATO’s Eastern Flank, closest to Russia. Poland is doing everything it can to keep the US, its strongest ally, on side. But it’s also building up its own military muscle.
It has recently purchased M1A2Abrams tanks, AH-64 Apache helicopters, and F-35 Lighting II fighter jets from the US. And Poland is building partnerships closer to home, for example with the Nordic and Baltic states — and even considering how it could work with other countries to benefit from their nuclear weapons. Poland’s history explains why it is so afraid of outside threats. During World War II, it was divided by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
Now it is determined to keep Russia out and cope with Vladimir Putin’s nuclear saber-rattling. 00:00 Can Poland still count on the US? 01:23 Russia's war in Ukraine and its effects on Poland 02:52 Putin's threats against Poland 04:01 Washington's changing view on Russia 04:49 US troops in Poland and Trump's plans 06:12 How Poland is rearming itself 07:29 Polish history: divided and occupied 08:24 How Poland joined NATO 09:50 Why NATO-Russia crisis unfolded 11:48 How NATO reinforced the Eastern Flank 12:32 Poland and Ukraine: dangerous crisis 13:22 Trump's shift on NATO and Russia 14:11 Eastern Flank and Nordic countries 15:10 Baltic flashpoint: Kaliningrad?
