Bengaluru South district police on Thursday arrested three people, including the quarry owner, in connection with the boulder collapse at a stone quarry that killed seven people in Madapattana village in Tavarekere Hobli on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The arrested accused have been identified as Panduranga, owner of Sai Ram Quarry, N. Lokesh, the quarry supervisor, and Raju, supervisor at Krishna Stone Crushers.
Police said more arrests are likely in the case. The arrests were made after a case was registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. A senior police officer told The Hindu that the arrests were based on a preliminary investigation and inadequate safety measures at the quarry. โWe have sought an interim report from the Department of Mines and Geology to understand what may have caused the incident.
The department can investigate the technical aspects and submit a report, based on which we will take further action,โ the officer said. He further said that a detailed investigation would be carried out based on the findings of the Department of Mines and Geology. During the preliminary investigation, police found no evidence of blasting at the time of the accident.
They suspect the collapse was caused by the instability of a massive rock that slid from a height of about 40 feet, though the exact cause of the rockslide is yet to be established.
