Keeping in mind the possibility of a decline in hydropower generation due to the effect of El Nino, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has instructed officials to formulate a special emergency action plan and pay urgent attention to storage and production of energy through other sources. Conducting the first progress review of the Energy Department here on Friday (July 3), the Chief Minister obtained details of the precautionary measures taken by the department to deal with the drought situation and take necessary steps to prevent public consumption.
He instructed that coal mines dedicated to the government should be operationalised for energy security, and sufficient coal storage should be maintained continuously. “In the current situation, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) should be implemented quickly for efficient management of renewable energy. We have become an IT capital. We are moving in the direction of making our State the capital of AI as well.
Therefore, we should prepare immediately for the increasing demand for electricity from data centres, AI infrastructure and the digital economy,” Mr. Shivakumar said. Since the peak electricity demand is expected to reach 38 gigawatts (GW) by 2035, he suggested that a plan to increase generation capacity should
be prepared along with the necessary financing roadmap. Appeal for clearing Escom dues Energy Minister K.J. George appealed to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar that steps should be taken to resolve the outstanding balance of ₹12,631 crore owed to Escoms by various government departments quickly or through securitisation.
