Iran has commenced a week-long funeral procession for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed earlier this year in coordinated strikes by the US and Israel. The ceremonies, delayed for months due to the ongoing conflict and the holy month of Muharram, are taking place during a 60-day ceasefire window. Millions of mourners are expected to participate across multiple cities in Iran and Iraq, with the final burial scheduled for July 9 in Mashhad.
Tehran is currently under a massive security lockdown. Due to severe security threats and ongoing tensions with Israel, the newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mustafa Khamenei, will not make a public appearance. The massive gathering will see representatives from nearly 30 nations. India is being represented by Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margaretta, alongside several other prominent Indian political figures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though invited by President Masoud Pezeshkian, will be skipping the rites due to a prior three-nation tour.
