ADILABAD Plans are afoot to conserve and develop the historic fort of the Gond kings in the tribal heartland of Utnoor in Adilabad district into a heritage tourism destination. During his visit to the nearly 700-year-old fort in Utnoor on Thursday, Adilabad Collector Rajarshi Shah discussed the conservation plan to preserve the rich architectural heritage of the erstwhile Gond kings for posterity.
The Collector was accompanied by the Utnoor Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) Project Officer Manda Makarandu. According to official sources, the plan envisages expediting the fort’s conservation works, setting up a tribal museum and earmarking dedicated space at the fort to showcase tribal handicrafts and Adivasi cultural heritage.
The plan seeks to restore the fort, which has a hoary past, to its original glory and develop it into a heritage tourism destination, creating livelihood opportunities for local tribal
youth, sources added. The Collector instructed the officials of the Archaeology Department to work in tandem with the Tourism and other allied government departments to implement the fort conservation plan expeditiously.
