A fresh case has been registered against Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee over the alleged illegal use of diagnostic equipment during Sebaashray Health Camps. The FIR has been registered at Diamond Harbour police station on the basis of a complaint by Sukdeb Das, a resident of Raynagar. Sebaashray was a community health initiative launched by Mr. Banerjee for his constituency Diamond Harbour and drew large crowds during the Trinamool Congress regime. Since the defeat of the Trinamool Congress in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, almost half a dozen FIRs have been registered against Mr. Banerjee. He has also been questioned by the State police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Enforcement Directorate.
Several Trinamool Congress leaders, who have parted ways with party chief Mamata Banerjee over the past two months, have levelled allegations against Mr. Banerjee. In the FIR, Mr. Banerjee has been charged with furtherance of a criminal conspiracy and common intention in allegedly operating unauthorised medical and diagnostic establishments at different places and times. The case has been registered under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, the Atomic Energy Act, the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, the Medical Commission Act and the West Bengal Clinical Establishments Act. Banerjee has also been summoned by investigating agencies in connection with allegations of forging signatures of Trinamool Congress MLAs and a case relating to alleged provocative remarks made during the Assembly election campaign.
During the day, the Calcutta High Court granted relief to Mr. Banerjee, saying that the police cannot take any coercive action against the Trinamool MP in the alleged signature-forgery case till July 17. Meanwhile, Mr. Banerjee has alleged that over the past few days, the STF (Special Task Force), the CID, and the West Bengal police had, without proper notice and in violation of basic legal safeguards, summoned or randomly picked up nearly 25 people connected to his office or associated with him in the name of interrogation. “They are being intimidated, threatened and pressured to give false statements against me.
Phones are being tapped, and even family members, including women, are being harassed and threatened,” said Mr. Banerjee, terming the actions “political intimidation at its worst”. Throwing a challenge to the BJP regime, he said, “Do what you can. I will not bow down till my last breath.”
