Daily commuters on Bengaluru’s Namma Metro can expect some respite from overcrowded trains, with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) preparing to introduce three si coach trainsets on the Green Line by August 2026. The induction, which comes more than a year after the arrival of the prototype train in the city, is expected to improve service frequency and reduce congestion on one of the network’s busiest corridors. The three trainsets are part of the new fleet being supplied by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) - Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. (TRSL). Among them is the prototype train manufactured by CRRC, which reached Bengaluru in January 2025 after facing significant delays. Although the prototype was initially intended for deployment on the Purple Line, BMRCL has now decided to introduce it on the Green Line instead. Tests almost done A senior BMRCL official said that the Corporation has already received three Distance-To-Go (DTG)-enabled trainsets, including the prototype.
According to the official, the testing process has taken longer than expected because trial runs could only be conducted during non-revenue hours on the operational Green Line. “We have received three DTG-enabled trainsets, including the prototype that arrived in Bengaluru in January 2025. Since the Green Line is already operational, testing activities had to be carried out only after passenger services ended each day. This restricted the available testing window and naturally extended the overall timeline. Despite these operational constraints, the testing programme has been progressing steadily, and we are working towards completing all remaining formalities before inducting the trains into passenger service," the official said. Before entering commercial operations, the trainsets are required to undergo an extensive validation process, including multiple performance trials, 37 statutory safety clearances and approval for rolling stock. The official added that several critical milestones have already been achieved, while only a few testings remain to be addressed.
"The oscillation trials have been successfully completed, and we have received rolling stock approval from the Railway Board. Signalling integration tests have also been concluded. We will approach the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) for the mandatory safety inspection and final clearance. Subject to regulatory approval, we expect the trains to be inducted into service by August," the official added. BMRCL has decided to deploy all 23 CRRC-Titagarh trainsets exclusively on the Green Line. While three trainsets have already been delivered, the remaining 20 are being manufactured at Titagarh Rail Systems' production facility in Uttarpara, West Bengal. Redistribution The decision is expected to have a wider impact on Bengaluru's metro operations. Once the new fleet begins operating on the Green Line, the existing trainsets on that corridor will be shifted to the Purple Line, which consistently records the highest passenger footfall in the metro network. This redistribution is expected to improve train availability and ease crowding on both lines, according to officials.
