Energy and Tourism Minister K.J. George on Friday announced that the State is preparing a comprehensive Coastal-Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy 2026. During a high-level review meeting of the Tourism Department, the Minister said, “We want to unlock the tourism potential of Coastal and Malnad regions, with a strong focus on cruise tourism, beach tourism, and world-class visitor infrastructure.” George also reviewed the progress of various tourism initiatives and discussed long-term strategies aimed at positioning Karnataka among India’s leading tourism destinations.
The proposed policy covers six districts across the coastal and malnad regions that seeks to promote theme-based tourism circuits, beach tourism, cruise tourism, adventure tourism, and community-led tourism initiatives that generate sustainable economic opportunities for local communities. The Minister has instructed officials to formulate a comprehensive strategy to attract more international cruise liners to Mangaluru and other ports in the State. He emphasised the need to develop attractive tourism circuits and curated travel experiences that encourage cruise passengers to spend more time in Karnataka.
Officials have been directed to hold consultations with major cruise operators to understand industry requirements and incorporate their suggestions into the new policy framework. “The policy should include initiatives to develop Blue Flag beaches, improve cleanliness and safety standards, strengthen tourism infrastructure, and promote water sports and adventure activities to offer
visitors a world-class coastal tourism experience. Visitor amenities across destinations managed by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) and Jungle Lodges & Resorts (JLR) have to be improved in terms of accommodation, basic infrastructure, sanitation, visitor information systems, and other essential tourist services to elevate the overall visitor experience,” he said.
