Recent monsoon rains in Maharashtra have resulted in the tragic loss of six lives within a week, exposing severe infrastructure failures and civic negligence. Incidents across Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Mira-Bhayander include fatalities caused by falling trees, electrocution from live power lines on waterlogged roads, and drownings in open manholes and uncovered sewage pits. The victims range from a two-year-old toddler to a sixty-year-old citizen.
Despite the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation being the wealthiest municipal body in the country, recurrent monsoon tragedies highlight persistent issues with city planning, contractor lethargy, and lack of safety measures. While authorities have registered police cases and initiated inquiries against responsible officials and contractors, citizens continue to face life-threatening conditions. The recurrent nature of these preventable disasters raises pressing questions regarding accountability, maintenance, and the overall effectiveness of civic governance during the monsoon season.
