A cyber security scare is impacting e-rickshaw drivers across multiple states in India, as unauthorized individuals use Bluetooth applications to remotely disable moving vehicles. Apps like Bat BMS, Losee, and Epoch AEON are reportedly connecting to the battery management systems of these vehicles, cutting power and bringing them to an abrupt halt. An India Today ground investigation across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh revealed widespread panic among drivers suffering from lost income and forced stoppages.
In Bijnor, a drivers union filed a police complaint against youths remotely stopping vehicles, while Ujjain police recorded their first cybercrime arrest related to this issue. Cyber law experts classify this unauthorized digital access as a computer-related offense under the Information Technology Act. Following the escalating crisis and viral videos of sudden vehicle halts, the government has stepped in, ordering the removal of the misused applications. Concerns remain over software vulnerabilities and cyber threats in India's rapidly expanding electric mobility sector.
