Mumbai, Thane On Red Alert As IMD Warns Of Heavy Rainfall This Weekend | Check Forecast Curated By, Last Updated: July 03, 2026, 19:01 IST As per the IMD's weather forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on July 4 and July 5. Mumbai, Thane and neighbouring Palghar are likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall over the weekend, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the region. According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at several places, with isolated locations likely to receive extremely heavy showers on July 4 and July 5. The weather department has also forecast gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph.
Mumbai Continues To Reel Under Heavy Rain Mumbai has been battered by relentless rainfall this week following the delayed onset of the monsoon, disrupting normal life across the city. Heavy showers continued through Friday, with several areas receiving over 70 mm of rainfall within just five hours. According to civic officials, the highest rainfall during the period was recorded at Supari Tank Municipal School in Bandra (73.8 mm), followed by Prabhadevi (72.2 mm), Bandra West (70.8 mm) and Parel (69.4 mm). The city has witnessed continuous rainfall since Thursday midnight, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, including Dadar, Andheri, Goregaon and Parel. Although floodwaters receded by Friday morning, commuters continued to face traffic congestion and delays in suburban train services. Authorities said Metro services, Mumbai’s suburban railway network and BEST bus operations continued to function despite the heavy rainfall. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai recorded over 100 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8 am on Friday.
The island city received an average of 126 mm, while the eastern suburbs recorded 110 mm and the western suburbs 114 mm. Among individual locations, Wadi Bunder recorded the highest rainfall at 150.2 mm, followed by Malabar Hill (145.8 mm) and Sandhurst Road (140.8 mm). In the western suburbs, Malpa Dongari Municipal School in Andheri recorded 136.6 mm, while Powai received the highest rainfall in the eastern suburbs at 124 mm. Rain-Related Deaths Raise Safety Concerns The heavy rainfall has also turned deadly. On Thursday, a man died after falling into an open manhole in Mumbai’s Chandivali area, triggering widespread outrage over civic safety. Earlier this week, an 11-year-old boy was killed in Chembur after a tree collapsed onto his school bus. With the IMD warning of more intense rainfall over the next two days, authorities have urged residents to avoid venturing into waterlogged areas unless necessary and to remain alert for possible flooding, falling trees and other monsoon-related hazards.
