Iran is observing a seven-day funeral ceremony for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The final rites, spanning across cities in Iran and Iraq, were delayed by a hundred and twenty days due to the war between the US, Israel, and Iran, followed by the holy days of Muharram. A sixty-day ceasefire signed in Switzerland has now allowed the mourning ceremonies to proceed under strict security.
Millions are expected to gather in Tehran as world leaders from thirty nations arrive to pay their last respects following his assassination by the United States. For India, this marks a major diplomatic moment. New Delhi's delegation includes Minister of State for External Affairs Pavitra Margarita and Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain. Invitations have also crossed party lines, with former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, Mehbooba Mufti, and Nitin Gadkari set to attend.
Khurshid noted that the participation is an 'important outreach to Iran' given the longstanding civilizational ties.
