WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows users to share a public username handle instead of a phone number, a move marketed as an enhancement to user privacy. However, the update has triggered significant security concerns. During the broadcast, cybersecurity expert Jiten Jain argued that the feature may serve Meta's broader monetization objectives rather than genuine privacy, potentially paving the way for premium services and closer integration with Instagram and Facebook ecosystems.
He highlighted the severe risks of impersonation, name squatting, and cybercrimes in India, such as digital arrests, where scammers could easily masquerade as celebrities or authorities. The Indian government has also expressed apprehension, with IT Ministry Secretary S Krishnan citing serious possibilities of cybercrime and directing the messaging platform to explain the necessity of this feature. Experts urge a careful balance between privacy and security to prevent widespread fraud.
