The city of Tehran is preparing for the final funeral rites of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which will take place during a 60-day ceasefire between the United States and Iran. The state funeral, delayed for 120 days due to the ongoing conflict and the holy month of Muharram, will see guests from over a hundred countries. The ceremonies begin on July 4 and will conclude with his burial in Mashhad on July 9.
Representing India in an official capacity, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain will attend. Emphasizing India's deep diplomatic ties with Iran, leaders across party lines, including Salman Khurshid, Mehbooba Mufti, and Agha Syed Hasan Musavi, are also attending. Khurshid called the visit 'an important message' and 'an important outreach to Iran, with whom we have a remarkable civilizational relationship'.
