(AFP photos) At least 40 people were killed after an overloaded passenger bus plunged into a deep gorge in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Friday, officials said. The vehicle was travelling from Quetta to Islamabad when it veered off a mountainous road and fell more than 80 feet into a ravine in the Dana Sar area of Zhob district.
The bus, operated by a private intercity service, had departed from the provincial capital Quetta on Thursday evening. There were 48 passengers on board at the time of the accident. Emergency officials said 11 others were injured in the crash and were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, with three in critical condition. According to Sanaullah Sherani, head of the emergency centre in Zhob district, rescue teams faced difficulties reaching the accident site due to the rugged terrain, delaying evacuation efforts. “As the accident occurred in a rugged mountainous area, rescue teams faced significant difficulties during the initial phase of the operation," he said. Sherani also noted that the bus fell approximately 70 to 80 feet (21 to 24 metres) into the ravine.
Shahid Rind, spokesperson for Balochistan’s chief minister, told news agency AFP that the bus had picked up additional passengers from another broken-down vehicle en route, leading to overcrowding. He said the chief minister has ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed officials to submit a detailed report. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed grief over the loss of lives. Road accidents are common in Pakistan’s mountainous regions, often linked to poor road conditions, overloading and weak enforcement of safety regulations.
