Expressing apprehension over the accused remaining on bail, Raja’s brother said she could tamper with evidence, influence witnesses, or even abscond. Raja’s Brother Fears Evidence Tampering “If Sonam remains out on bail, she could destroy evidence, influence witnesses, or flee.

We believe the Supreme Court will ensure justice for us," the brother said. Earlier in the day, the top court refused to stay the High Court’s order granting bail to Sonam. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Sheel Nagu noted that she had already been released from jail and was staying in Shillong in compliance with the bail conditions imposed by the trial court. SC Refuses To Stay Sonam Raghuvanshi’s Bail Appearing for the Meghalaya government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta described the case as “really shocking" and urged the top court to stay the high court’s order. He argued that Sonam was granted bail on the technical ground that the full grounds of arrest were not supplied to her. Mehta alleged that the murder was premeditated and claimed Sonam, along with three accomplices, killed Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya before disposing of his body in a gorge.

He also told the court that Sonam later absconded and was arrested in Uttar Pradesh. The Meghalaya government had challenged the bail order before the Supreme Court. Sonam Raghuvanshi, an Indore resident, was arrested in June 2025 after Raja’s body was recovered from a gorge in Meghalaya’s Sohra region. Investigators have alleged that she conspired with hired assailants to kill her husband for financial gain. The Meghalaya High Court had upheld the trial court’s decision to grant her bail, rejecting the state’s plea seeking its cancellation.
