The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has raised concerns over the username feature on messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal. The ministry warned of serious possibilities of impersonation and cyber crimes associated with usernames, which allow communication without revealing phone numbers. The government has directed WhatsApp to explain the introduction of this feature and has sought similar explanations from Signal and Telegram.
While WhatsApp has claimed the feature enhances privacy with necessary security measures, the government remains concerned about the risks of cyber crimes. A notice has been issued to the service providers to explain the dimensions of this new policy.
