Updating your Aadhaar card just got a little easier. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has rolled out a new feature on the Aadhaar App that allows residents to add or update their email ID directly from their smartphones, without having to visit an Aadhaar centre. The service is available for free starting July 1, 2026, for a period of six months, and works on both Android and iOS. Read Full Story The response has been swift. Within just two days of the feature going live, more than 2.5 lakh people had already used the app to update their email addresses, according to a statement by the Ministry of Electronics and IT.
Why linking your email to Aadhaar matters Adding an email ID to your Aadhaar isn't just a formality. Once linked, users receive real-time email notifications whenever an Aadhaar authentication request is made, which can help people stay on top of who is accessing their identity details. The email update feature is part of a broader push by UIDAI to make Aadhaar-related services more accessible through the app. The Aadhaar App already allows users to update their mobile number and address directly from their phones. So far, over 40 million people have used the app to update their mobile numbers, while around one million have used it to update their addresses.
To use the new feature, residents can download or update the Aadhaar App on their device and access the email update option from within the app. The email update feature is part of a broader set of changes UIDAI has been making to the Aadhaar App over the past few months. The new Aadhaar App, which officially replaced the older mAadhaar App earlier this year, is built around privacy and giving users more control over their data. Unlike the older platform, which relied heavily on OTPs and often exposed complete Aadhaar details during verification, the new app lets users share only specific information such as name, age, or address, depending on what is actually needed.
The app also supports QR-based verification, face authentication, biometric lock and unlock, and authentication history tracking, which lets users see where and when their Aadhaar was used. It also supports up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device, making it easier for families to manage multiple accounts in one place. Ends
