An India Today investigation reveals that zinc phosphide, a highly toxic rat poison with no antidote, is easily available for bulk purchase online with minimal checks. Despite regulation requiring verified identity and documented purposes for bulk purchases, sellers were found willing to supply fifty kilograms of the poison with no licence checks, identity verification, or basic paperwork, even agreeing to waive Goods and Services Tax requirements.
This lethal substance has been linked to two cases in Maharashtra, including the mysterious deaths of four family members and an alleged plot to poison mourners during a procession. The ease of online access raises concerns about public safety and regulatory enforcement.
