Recent monsoon rains in Mumbai have exposed severe civic lapses, resulting in four deaths over the past four days. In Sakinaka, a fifty-five-year-old pedestrian died after falling into an open manhole on Khairani Road. The BMC has filed a police complaint against the contractor and workers, and four municipal officials have been suspended. In Thane, a seventeen-year-old girl was electrocuted by a live pole, while a forty-two-year-old woman lost her life to electrocution on a waterlogged road in Dombivli.
Additionally, two women survived electric shocks in Navi Mumbai, leading to the suspension of a civic engineer. Authorities have constituted a four-member inquiry panel to investigate the Sakinaka manhole incident. Despite these tragedies, waterlogging persists in areas like Matunga, where municipal workers are now guarding open manholes to prevent further accidents. The city is currently bracing for a high tide with waves expected to rise over fourteen feet alongside gusty winds.
