Following a notice to WhatsApp, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued notices to Telegram and Signal. The Centre has asked both platforms to clarify how their username features operate and what safeguards are in place to prevent impersonation, identity misuse, and other potential abuses.
The username feature allows communication without sharing phone numbers, which the government fears could escalate cybercrime and illegal activities. Scrutiny has intensified, particularly around Telegram, which was recently subjected to a temporary ban during the NEET-UG re-examination and is frequently linked to coordinated scams across India.
