'Won't Leave Aggression Unanswered': Iran Says US Violated Truce After Overnight Strikes Published By, Last Updated: May 26, 2026, 20:39 IST US Central Command had said that its forces had struck missile sites in southern Iran and targeted boats it claimed were attempting to lay mines in the Gulf. (IMAGE: REUTERS) Iran on Tuesday accused the United States of violating the ceasefire in the past 48 hours and warned it will respond to any further escalation, as tensions continue despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war. The foreign ministry said that US forces carried out what it described as “gross violations" of the truce in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province.

“The US terrorist army, continuing its illegal and unjustified actions since the ceasefire… has, in the past 48 hours, committed a gross violation of the ceasefire in the Hormozgan region," the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement. It added that Tehran “will not leave any aggression unanswered and will not retreat one step in defending its territory." The statement came as a top Iranian delegation was in Qatar for talks as part of a “diplomatic process" aimed at ending the war. Talks Stall As Fresh Strikes Shake Truce On Monday, the US Central Command had said that its forces had struck missile sites in southern Iran and targeted boats it claimed were attempting to lay mines in the Gulf. Meanwhile, in response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had claimed they had downed a US drone and warned that any further violations of the ceasefire would face a “legitimate and certain" response.

US military aircraft “entered Iranian airspace in the Persian Gulf region, and air defence units of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps… identified and shot down an MQ-9 drone," the Guards said in a statement on their Sepah News website. The Guards forces “also fired upon an RQ-4 drone and an intruding F-35 fighter jet," the statement said, without specifying when the incidents took place. The latest exchanges as negotiations to end the war have continued without a breakthrough. Over the weekend, there were hopes of positive progress from the discussions; however, following the latest strikes, prospects of a deal to end the war between the US and Iran appear to have been set back. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since April 8 through Pakistani mediation.
