(X) A major road cave-in was reported for the third consecutive day on the main road in Surat’s Dindoli area, with a water tanker getting trapped after a section of the road caved in. The road suddenly caved in at the centre of a crossroads, leaving the water tanker stranded and disrupting traffic from multiple directions. According to civic officials, the cave-in occurred at a location where storm water drainage work had recently been completed.
A 1,000-mm-diameter pipeline had been laid around 4.5 metres below the surface, following which the trench was refilled and the road reinstated. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) immediately began repair work, barricaded the affected section, and took up restoration on priority. Officials later said the damaged road had been repaired and that traffic had been restored after the initial disruption. The repeated road collapses have raised fresh concerns over the condition of civic infrastructure, particularly during the ongoing monsoon season. Heavy rainfall lashed South Gujarat, causing widespread waterlogging, inundating low-lying bridges and damaging infrastructure across several districts. Authorities urged residents to remain cautious, avoid low-lying areas and refrain from crossing flooded roads and bridges. Surat district received some of the highest rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 6 am on Thursday.
Palsana recorded 203 mm of rain, followed by Bardoli with 197 mm, Mahuva with 191 mm, Ambika with 164 mm and Umarpada with 120 mm. The neighbouring Valsad district also witnessed very heavy showers. Umbergaon recorded 196 mm of rainfall, while Vapi received 189 mm and Pardi 113 mm. Several areas in the district reported waterlogging as rainwater accumulated on roads and entered residential localities. A 21-year-old motorcyclist, Sufiyan Mamuji, a mobile phone repair technician from Kosadi village in Mangrol taluka, died after an electricity pole collapsed on him while he was travelling towards Bharuch, sources said. Meanwhile, a portion of the cement concrete slope protection along the newly built Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near the Kim crossroads collapsed due to the rain, resulting in soil erosion beneath the carriageway.
