As meter readers across the State are busy completing the verification of Gruha Jyothi beneficiaries beginning from July 1, next month’s electricity bill that the consumers will receive will be calculated on the average usage of units in the past three months. A senior official from Bescom said, “Since all the meter readers across the State and in Bengaluru have been assigned the task of verifying Gruha Jyothi beneficiaries before August 31, they don’t have sufficient time to generate bills this month.
Therefore, the average usage of units in the past three months will be considered and based on that a bill will be generated for July.” He added, “This is applicable only for domestic consumers and not to the commercial users like hotels, industries and more. Any difference in the number of units will be adjusted in the bill of August month. In case if it shows excess units used by the consumer, then they have to pay it in the month of August.
If it is lesser than 200 units, then it will reflect zero amount to be paid.” The official stressed that the meter readers have to try to complete the process before August 31. When asked whether the verification would continue even after the August deadline as there are lakhs of beneficiaries, he said, “There is no instruction on what will be done if the exercise is not completed before the deadline. The average units bill is applicable only for July month.” As per the officials of different sub-divisions, each meter reader has to complete verification of at least 50 houses in one day.
The Energy Department has instructed all the meter readers to visit the houses at least three times in case of their absence at home. The same is applicable for tenants.
