Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology has for the very first time opened a pay ward facility for patients, acceding to a felt need from the side of the public. The pay wards have been set up in the new nine-storeyed PMSSY block of the hospital spanning over 2,70,000 sq ft area. Hospital sources said that 16 of the 40 rooms are currently open for the public and that the rest are also being readied. The institute, as a matter of policy, has had general wards alone so far where a patient companion is allowed only in special situations and if the doctor thinks that it is required.
The patient companions, however, were not allowed to keep their belongings in the ward or to do their personal care routine such as bathing, changing clothes etc. Patient families would thus invariably hang around the premises all day and night as they could not fully stay away from the hospital. This was a major point of inconvenience for many. Longstanding demand “The need for private rooms has been a longstanding demand from the patients’ side, from the normal paying category patients.
The hospital wing of the SCTIMST is expected to generate revenue for its operational expenses and the new pay wards will aid this. While it has been the hospital’s policy right from the inception that all patients would have the same facilities, on the other side, many paying category patients have been staying away from the SCTIMST because they find the lack of private rooms a big inconvenience,” a senior doctor at the institute pointed out. The new private rooms are air-conditioned and have television and all modern amenities and designated car parking facility.
A daily rent of ₹6,000 will be charged. A patient companion would be allowed to stay back. Patient would be provided the hospital diet while the companion can place food orders with the canteen.
