According to Mani. Maran, Historian and Tamil Scholar, Sarasvati Mahal Library, Thanjavur, and Thillaigovindarajan, a retired school teacher, in one of the stone inscriptions found
in this dilapidated Sri Sundareswarar temple, there is reference about Rajathirajan I, presumed to belong the period 1044-1052 A.D. Another stone inscription threw light about
the fact that this temple had existed during the Pandya and Vijayanagara periods. Further, some fossils were found near the temple, they added.
