The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Thursday (July 2, 2026) that the byelection for the Manjalpur Assembly constituency in Gujarat’s Vadodara district will be held on July 30, with the counting of votes scheduled for August 3, 2026. The seat fell vacant following the death of senior BJP MLA and former Gujarat Minister Yogesh Patel on June 2 after a prolonged illness.
He was 79. According to the schedule announced by the ECI, the notification for the byelection will be issued on July 6, while the last date for filing nomination papers is July 13. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on July 14, and candidates can withdraw their nominations till July 16.
Polling will be held on July 30 and the votes will be counted on August 3, it said. With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force in the constituency. Patel represented the Raopura constituency in Vadodara city five times between 1990 and 2007 before shifting to the newly created Manjalpur seat following the delimitation of Assembly constituencies.
He won the Manjalpur seat in the 2012, 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections, completing eight consecutive victories in the Gujarat Assembly polls spanning 36 years.
