The Dainik Bhaskar newspaper published a report on July 1 about Madhya Pradesh urban development minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, in a letter to chief minister Mohan Yadav, apparently complaining about the neglect of his hometown Indore by the government. The report claimed the letter was written on June 20, and that Vijayvargiya mentioned in it that if the issues related to Indore weren’t resolved, he would be compelled to raise them on public fora. Read Full Story The same day the report was published, Vijayvargiya distanced himself from the letter, remarking to the media: “You should ask the newspaper that carried the story.” The report claimed that Vijayvargiya had in the letter stated that he had been facing non-cooperation and obstacles for the past two and a half years.
He purportedly said transfers were being made without consulting him and the masterplan for Indore was long delayed. The metropolitan area notified for Indore and Ujjain had Ujjain’s name preceding that of Indore although only 59 per cent of Ujjain’s area was included in it whereas the whole of Indore was part of it. The state government recently trifurcated the Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV) in Bhopal, an umbrella university for engineering colleges, with one centre each at Ujjain, Bhopal and Jabalpur. Vijayvargiya’s letter, according to the report, stated that even though Indore housed the Saintgits College of Engineering, a reputed engineering college, the city was not included in the RGPV plan.
The report mentioned Vijayvargiya raising the neglect of Pithampur Industrial Area, located close to Indore, while the government’s focus remained on Vikrampuri in Ujjain. Unlike Ujjain, Indore was not getting its share of development works for the upcoming Simhastha (kumbh mela), including expansion of the airport. The report drew the Opposition’s reaction immediately. chief minister and Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh took to X to say he could well imagine Vijayvargiya’s ‘pain’ over the matters he had raised. Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha said his hometown Jabalpur too had not received what was promised. The purported letter has grabbed political attention all the more because chief minister Yadav is the minister in charge of Indore district as well as the MLA from Ujjain South.
Vijayvargiya represents the Indore-1 assembly seat. It is an open secret in Madhya Pradesh politics that Yadav and Vijayvargiya are not on the best of terms. Meanwhile, there has been no reaction on the matter so far from the chief minister or his office. Subscribe to India Today Magazine Ends
