Police Pin Hope On Polygraph Test To Solve Biggest Mystery In Ketan Agarwal Murder Ketan Agarwal, 26, was allegedly pushed to his death into a nearly 400-metre-deep gorge at Lohagad Fort near Pune on June 18. Police claim that Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary, 22, conspired to kill him to avoid Siya Goyal’s upcoming marriage to Ketan Agarwal. The couple had got engaged in February and were scheduled to marry in November this year. Both accused are currently in police custody until July 3. Why Police Want A Polygraph Test In Ketan Agarwal Murder Case? The case presents several challenges as police have found no eyewitnesses and no CCTV footage capturing the exact location where Ketan Agarwal allegedly fell from the cliff. They also claim that the accused deleted extensive call records and data from their mobile phones, including files from recycle bins, before and after the incident in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
Moreover, conflicting statements from family members and the accused regarding wedding plans have complicated efforts to establish the alleged motive. Given these hurdles, a polygraph test could help verify statements, identify inconsistencies and generate fresh investigative leads. What Can A Lie Detector Test Reveal? While polygraph results are not admissible as direct evidence in court, investigators often use them as an investigative tool. The examination records physiological responses such as breathing patterns, heart rate, blood pressure and skin conductivity while a subject answers a series of questions. Investigators then analyse changes in these responses to assess whether answers to relevant questions differ significantly from baseline responses. What Does The Law Say On Lie Detector Test? The Supreme Court’s landmark 2010 judgment in Selvi vs State of Karnataka ruled that polygraph tests, narco-analysis and brain-mapping tests cannot be conducted without the subject’s consent. The court held that involuntary administration of such tests violates constitutional protections against self-incrimination under Article 20(3) and the right to personal liberty under Article 21.
