The Congress on Thursday (July 2, 2026) questioned the “silence” of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and the BJP’s top leadership over allegations that Mr. Yadav’s family and associates were involved in large scale land purchases in Ujjain’s areas where development projects were planned. The party demanded that Mr. Yadav either explain the transactions publicly or resign pending an inquiry. Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office here, former MLA Praveen Pathak said Mr. Yadav had remained silent for 10 days after the allegations surfaced. He said the issue was not merely about land purchases but about whether access to power and prior knowledge of government decisions and development projects had been used for private gain.
“If that is not the case, why has the Chief Minister remained silent for over 10 days,” he asked. Pathak alleged that the timing and location of the purchases pointed to “serious irregularities”. He alleged a possible link between the purchases and infrastructure projects announced or advanced in the region during Mr. Yadav’s tenure as a Minister and later as Chief Minister. The Congress leader demanded a judicial inquiry into the alleged land transactions under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge. The matter should also be probed by the Enforcement Directorate, the Income Tax Department and the Lokayukta, he added.
The Congress leader said the issue had been repeatedly raised by the party’s State unit, including Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari and Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar, but the BJP government had not responded. Announcing the party’s next course of action, Mr. Pathak said the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee would hold press conferences across the State, launch an online portal for corruption complaints, and stage a gherao of the Chief Minister’s residence in Bhopal on July 15. He said the Congress Legislature Party would raise the issue during the Assembly session beginning on July 20, and party workers would also seek answers from the Chief Minister during his district visits.
“If the government still does not act, we will launch a historic agitation in Ujjain,” Mr. Pathak said, reiterating the demand for a white paper and a court-monitored judicial inquiry into the land transactions.
