A day after a 19-year-old youth and a 17-year-old girl belonging to different castes were found dead in a thatched shed at Sathangudi in Mayiladuthurai district, post-mortem was conducted on the youth’s body on Wednesday (July 1, 2026). Officials said the youth’s parents agreed to a post-mortem after police and revenue officials held talks with them at the Tharangambadi taluk office. Representatives of the VCK and the CPI(M), Revenue Divisional Officer of Sirkali, and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mayiladuthurai and Sirkazhi were present.
Superintendent of Police (in-charge), Mayiladuthurai, G. Stalin, joined the meeting later. During the meeting, the parents of the youth, who belonged to the Scheduled Caste, wanted the autopsy to be conducted by a team of doctors and that it be videographed. Besides booking a case of murder, they sought a copy of the initial report of the autopsy, a free house site patta, and a government job for a member of the family, according to the police and revenue officials.
The officials explained to them that the case could be altered only after obtaining the autopsy report. Police sources said the post-mortem was conducted at the Tiruvarur Government Medical College Hospital, after which the body was handed over to the family. Girl’s father arrested The Poraiyar police, on Tuesday (June 30) arrested the girl’s father and four others under the SC/ST Act, on a complaint preferred by the youth on Monday (June 29), a day before he was found dead.
The youth had alleged in the complaint that he was abused and assaulted by the father of the girl and a few others. Lakshmikanthan was remanded and lodged in the Cuddalore Central Prison. The Poraiyar police had already arrested four persons on Monday night in connection with this case.
